Hip 856 · Keeneland September
How we bought Vekoma × Whats Yur Story.
There was broad interest in this colt among people we respect, which made the final price particularly attractive to us. Vekoma had already established himself as an important young sire, and our team was comfortable with the type of horse he was producing.
We had seen the other end of that market earlier in the year, when Legion was involved with a Vekoma that brought $600,000 at Fasig-Tipton July. Hip 856 came to us at $260,000. The comparison is not that the horses are identical; it is that the sire can command substantially more when the market and individual line up.
For us, this colt was another example of staying disciplined long enough for the sale to come to us.
The Dam Side
Whats Yur Story, by Liaison, has already produced Sexagenarian, a multiple winner who won on debut at two. The real depth comes through second dam Kings Lynn, a graded-stakes-placed mare and a half-sister to Grade III winner Scoop.
Kings Lynn produced Grade II winner Sara Louise, who in turn produced graded performers Nash and Sara Street. Another branch of the family produced Grade II winner and Grade I-placed Forbidden Kingdom. This is a speed-rich American family with repeated graded performance close enough to matter.
The Physical
He is a powerful, mature-looking bay with considerable depth through the barrel and a very strong hindquarter. Compared with several of the more scopey horses in the book, he looks more compact and muscular, which fits the speed influence in both Vekoma and the female family.
He still has adequate length through the neck and body, so the power does not make him look cramped. The overall impression is strength, substance and a fairly finished yearling physical.
This colt looks like the pedigree. Vekoma brings high-level speed, and the female family has repeatedly produced fast graded horses, including Forbidden Kingdom. The physical reinforces that theme with power and depth. At $260,000, we were able to buy that package without paying the premium that the strongest Vekoma yearlings were commanding elsewhere in the market.
Physical comments are based on the sale photograph and are observations, not a substitute for live inspection or veterinary review.
