Hip 488 · Keeneland September

How we bought Omaha Beach × Victoria Barkley.

This was a different kind of purchase from the Jackie’s Warrior colt. Hip 488 is a bigger, more route-oriented physical, and he looked to us like a colt who could develop with two-turn dirt races in mind if his ability matches his frame.

Omaha Beach has already shown that he can sire runners with both speed and the ability to stretch out. At $300,000, we did not view him as a horse the market had missed completely; we viewed him as a horse we liked at a price that remained within our valuation.

There is an important distinction between finding a bargain and simply buying the right horse at the right number. This colt fell into the second category.

The Dam Side

Victoria Barkley is an unraced daughter of Uncle Mo, but the strength of this page sits immediately behind her. Her dam Stanwyck, by Empire Maker, won the Grade III Turnback the Alarm and placed in the Grade I Apple Blossom and Grade I Personal Ensign while earning nearly $500,000.

The third dam, Set Them Free, is one of the most recognizable mares in the group. She produced Kentucky Derby winner Giacomo and Grade I winner Tiago, along with Stanwyck. That is a serious classic dirt family, and the Uncle Mo / Empire Maker combination underneath Omaha Beach gives the colt a pedigree that makes his route-oriented physical especially interesting.

The Physical

He is one of the more substantial colts in the group. The photograph shows a deep barrel, strong bone, a broad hindquarter and good overall mass. He is longer through the body than the pure speed types and has the look of a horse who should be comfortable carrying more condition as he matures.

The strongest visual impression is power without obvious compactness. He has plenty behind the saddle and enough length in front of it to suggest a two-turn frame. He looks physically consistent with the stamina and classic quality on the dam side.

Our Read

This may be the clearest pedigree-to-physical match in the book. Stanwyck, Giacomo and Tiago give the female family legitimate route credentials, while the colt himself looks substantial and built to develop rather than merely flash early speed. That is why the $300,000 purchase felt like paying a fair price for the right kind of horse.

Physical comments are based on the sale photograph and are observations, not a substitute for live inspection or veterinary review.
